Call to Order Lyleen Collins called the meeting to order at 6:06 pm and welcomed those in attendance.
Election of Officers Ms. Collins introduced the slate of nominees for PTSA Executive Board. Following a motion from Luann Pollock and a second from the floor, the following were unanimously elected to the Board:

Report and Approval of the Budget Ms. Shirley Violand-Jones made the
following report:

the financial report for the 2007-2008 school year was presented
-
another donation fund–raiser is planned after about $7000 was raised last year
-
the PTSA filed a form 990EZ with the IRS for the 2007-2008 school year
-
the PTSA’s books were audited
Discussion followed a question regarding the
lack of a budget for teacher instructional supplies. Ms. Violand–Jones, Ms. Collins, and Mr. Hawks explained that
money for instructional supplies is being made available by the principal’s
office, while the PTSA will focus on fulfilling grant requests from teachers
for special projects from classes and organizations at DSA.
Following a motion from Helen Cunny and a second
from Gwen Uayeh, the proposed budget for 2008-2009 was approved unanimously by
the membership.

David Hawks, DSA Principal, made the following report:

as of today’s meeting, DSA has 1458 students enrolled

parents are encouraged to sign up for the Yahoo news group from the DSA
homepage

the webpage will be updated soon

all teachers will have voicemail soon

all arts venues are very busy
-
Mr. Hawks described a vision for DSA as a unique school with opportunities for
students to grow and flourish through rigorous academics and training in the
arts
-
DSA continues to expand AP and honors offerings.

new tennis courts are coming and the track will be resurfaced in the future
Site
Based School Improvement Team Election Jeff Goll, Angela Miles, and Lori Swarze
were placed into nomination by a motion from Helen Cuny, and seconded by
Shirley Violand–Jones. The slate was
accepted by unanimous voice vote.
Career
Expo Announcement
The 3rd annual career expo will be held on Thursday, November 13, from 5 to 8:00pm at Northgate
Mall.

students can preregister for a chance for a $50

parents are eligible for a chance for a $100 gas

the first 1000 attendees will receive free food
from Chick-fil-A

this event is a chance for students to meet and
speak in detail with professionals in a wide variety of fields to find out
about careers and what kinds of training might be required
General
Announcements
- The
Guidance Office will hold a college information night Thursday in the Media
Center
-
Parents should read the student handbook in front of the Time Tracker
- Sign
up for email announcements through Yahoo groups
- The
Book Fair Family Night will be held on October 8, 2008 from 5-8 pm
- Parent
Information Night on texting, media and technology will be later this fall
-
Parents and students were invited to obtain additional information about the
PTSA, sign up to volunteer or to buy DSA logo wear, and learn about DSA clubs
at the conclusion of the business meeting.
- DSA
will participate in the Reflections program, a juried competition for a variety
of arts, for the first time in years
-
Parents were reminded to save box tops and Campbell’s soup labels and turn them
in in the main office
-
Parents were encouraged to volunteer as proctors for EOG and EOC testing
Ms. Collins thanked members for attending and
closed the meeting at 7:00 pm.
