DSA PTSA EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

Call to Order   President Lyleen Collins called the meeting to order at 5:50 pm. 

DSA PTSA Positions for 2009-2010     Most Executive Board and Committee Chair positions have been filled or are pending word from candidates.  Only committee chairs left to fill include Belk Days, Great Human Race, Proctors, and Shopping Perks.

AP Physics Request    The AP Physics class has cancelled the field trip to the observatory, and Dr. LaCosse asked if the money allotted for the field trip could be used to cover expenses related to a rocket competition.  Ms. Collins will email PTSA Board members to conduct an email vote on this item.

Review of Minutes   Deferred to next meeting.

Treasurer’s Report   Shirley Violand-Jones submitted the following report in writing:

Website Report     Don Bean will take over from Luann Pollack as Website Chair.

Booster Club Report      Ms. Collins reported that Ms. Violand-Jones is working on securing a PTSA liaison from the Booster Club.

Principal’s Report      This is the first week of the final quarter.  The staff has discussed the impact of budget cuts on DSA.  Several DSA students have received awards:  at least three won National Scholastic Art Awards, a DPS middle school student had her novel published, Sarah Catherine Carter was selected to appear in a movie about the history of North Carolina, and several DSA students were accepted to NC Governor’s School.  There is a meeting of the Carr Input Committee with the DPS administration to review the results of the Carr Building feasibility study on April 23, 2009.  Ms. Collins and Mr. Jeff Goll are members of the committee.  There is a middle school awards ceremony scheduled after spring break.

Student Liaison Report      Sarah Jane Huber suggested that students interested in photography could take pictures of the Carr Building prior to work beginning this summer to use in an exhibit to document the interior and exterior of the building.  A tentative date of the final Friday before the end of school has been set for a carnival sponsored by the Student Council and the Booster Club.  A pep rally is scheduled for April 9, 2009.  There was a meeting today of the DSA Student Council with Dr. Harris, DPS superintendent. 

PTSA Appreciation     Thank you notes were received from sixth graders for providing funding for their field trip to Medieval Times.

Teacher Appreciation Report     Teresa McBennett submitted the following report:

On March 18, 2009 on the early release day, we served the staff granola bars, apples, pretzel sticks and bottled water.  This event cost $30.83.  We had 1 box of granola bars left from the fall event.  The apples and pretzel sticks were donated.

Our budget for the year is $1700.  We have spent $803.55.  We received $60 in donations plus a $50.00 Costco card in the fall and $130 in the spring.   We have $1136.45 remaining for the year.

The meeting was adjourned by President Collins at 6:20 pm.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 5:30 pm in the Community Lounge.
